Inside and Out: Rethinking Learning Resources

Learning Resources are working with Nomad, a specialist library design company, to redesign the Sheppard library. The closure of Cat Hill in 2011 will bring challenges in the way services are provided and space is used so it is an ideal opportunity to give the library a makeover!

Nomad will be in the libraries at Cat Hill and Hendon over the next few weeks observing how space is currently used, as well as running workshops for staff and students.

They also have a Blog http://insideoutsblog.wordpress.com  and Twitter feed, www.twitter.com/mdxinsideout so sign up, follow their progress and add your comments.

Welcome Key Note, Farewell Mintel

Keynote logoLearning Resources is pleased to announce that, after consultation with the Marketing & Enterprise Department, we have replaced Mintel with a new subscription to Key Note.

Visit www.keynote.co.uk to access the database.

For help and support, please contact Samantha Halford, the Senior Liaison Librarian for Marketing & Enterprise.

Netbeans

Did you know you could safely cancel the Netbeans installation that occurs when you first use Internet Explorer on a university PC? This will save quite a lot of time spent waiting. This assumes of course that you don't actually want to use Netbeans! If you don't know what it is, you can assume you won't be using it . . .

Wireless & VPN sessions

Learning Resources staff at Hendon campus are now providing daily sessions in The Sheppard Library to assist students with accessing the wireless network and installing VPN software.

These sessions will be taking place in Room SB25 at the following times:

12:00 - 13:30

14:30 - 16:00

For further information about the wireless network, please visit:

http://www.lr.mdx.ac.uk/comp/wireless/

Download Server

Learning Resources is building a download server to enable downloads of software packages whose licences entitle staff and students to use the software on their home computers. At present SPSS 15 and 17 for PC, SPSS 16 for Mac, Minitab and Nvivo (both for PC) are available, and other packages will follow. You will need to login to the server with your Middlesex computer network ID and password. This is the link to the download server . . .

Microsoft Office Version Incompatibility

Students please note:

Although all Middlesex PCs for student use have Microsoft Office 2007 installed, not all academic staff have this version on their PCs. Your lecturer may not be able to open your work if it is saved as an Office 2007 file.

It is recommended that you save your work by selecting Save As (rather than Save) and then selecting the option to save as an Office 97-2003 document.

This will save a copy of the document that is fully compatible with versions of Office from 97 to 2003
