ATHENS is a national
authentication system for granting access to online electronic
information services purchased by the university. An Athens
username and password allows individuals to access a range
of databases to find and locate information.
Middlesex University uses devolved authentication to verify
Athens account credentials. This means you gain access to
Athens protected databases by using your Middlesex IT userID
and password on a local login page.
Click
here to login to Athens.
A list of the databases subscribed to by Learning Resources
can then be displayed, along with links to click to use
them. To enable Athens to recognise you as being from Middlesex
University in the future, a cookie must be saved on your
computer. Follow the link from the login page to set the
institutional cookie or do so here.
If you do not follow the university Athens login procedure,
but try to login from Athens own home page, remember you
must select "alternative login" to enable you
to use your Middlesex credentials.
Please Note:
Franchised Courses/Associate Colleges:
Only registered staff and students of Middlesex University
can register with Athens for access to Networked Information
services. Responsibility for the provision of resources
for staff and students at Associated Colleges or on franchised
courses rests with the college or organisation.
UK Access Management Federation
From 1st August 2008 a new national authentication system
based on open source technology has been introduced. This
is known as the UK Access Management Federation, or simply
the UK Federation.
Some Middlesex licensed resources can now be accessed only through the
UK Federation, but in practice this just means one additional
step before your Athens login.
When you find a resource with a UK Federation login button, click on this and you will
be asked to "Select your home organisation" from a dropdown menu:

Choose Middlesex University and click on Select. You will be taken to our Athens
authentication page, where you can login with your university network id, as described in the Athens section above.
Note that if you link to a UK Federation authenticated resource
using the link supplied on the Learning Resources eResources
web pages you will sometimes avoid the need to select the
home organisation. |
